Bridges Q & A

What is a dental bridge?

Dental bridges fill in the gap of one or more missing teeth to improve your dental health and the appearance of your smile. Bridges are artificial teeth attached to crowns or dental implants. Their benefits include:

  • Better speech
  • More efficient chewing
  • Reduced adjacent teeth shifting
  • A more aesthetically pleasing smile
  • More confidence

Bridges are custom made just for you and often permanently attached, or fixed, into place. They are made of porcelain, ceramic, or combinations of various materials.

What are the different types of bridges?

There are numerous types of bridges available. After a thorough dental exam and X-rays, Dr. Shirazi lets you know which bridge best matches your needs. Examples include:

  • Traditional fixed bridges containing two or more crowns with an artificial tooth between
  • Implant-supported bridges that attach to dental implants, or metal posts, in your jawbone
  • Removable dental bridges or dentures

The right choice for you depends on the condition of your teeth, the number of teeth you have missing, and your preferences.

What should I expect when getting a bridge?

Receiving a dental bridge is usually a two-step process. During your first visit, Dr. Shirazi prepares the teeth adjacent to a missing tooth by removing part of the enamel and reshaping them. If you require an implant-supported bridge, you’ll require surgical placement of metal posts within your jawbone prior to bridge placement.

Dr. Shirazi takes digital 3D images of your mouth and sends the information to a dental lab, where your new custom bridge is created. In the meantime, she gives you a temporary bridge to protect your teeth.

During a second visit, she removes the temporary bridge and permanently fixes your custom bridge in place by attaching it to adjacent teeth or implants.

How should I care for my bridge?

Care for your bridge as you would your natural teeth. Floss daily, brush twice daily using fluoride toothpaste and see Dr. Shirazi regularly for checkups and cleanings. Wear a mouthguard at night if you clench or grind your teeth and avoid chewing in ice and other sharp objects.
